Meet Amy. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on Dec 1st 2011. In January of 2012, she underwent a double mastectomy and commenced chemotherapy in April of the same year.
Consumed by the process, appointments and ongoing treatments, Amy was just focused on getting well. But then the unexpected happened.
Here is her story:
I had just finished chemotherapy treatment. I had no hair and was still a lil weak from the last dose. I was at work and my boss brought over a potential new employee and introduced us. Rowen. At this stage I didn't think much as fighting cancer had pretty much consumed my brain. He seemed like a nice guy and I thought he'd do well at work.
He was offered the job.
While chatting to a work mate Charlotte, Rowen overheard us talking about my Hercepton Treatment and upcoming surgery. He asked Charlotte about it and she told him my story. He couldn't believe it. His words were "the smiling, laughing, bubbly girl has cancer?!"
He started to ask more questions about it all but without being intrusive. Eventually a friendship formed. I had just had my second surgery, having the tissue expanders removed and replaced with silicone implants. Rowen offered to come see me but there was no way I was letting him see me without makeup or my wig. I kindly declined his offer but said we could meet up for coffee one night after work. I had six weeks off work after surgery so had plenty of time on my hands.
I was strangely nervous about this coffee meet up but didn't know why. But when we met for coffee, it was amazing. We talked, laughed, shared stories and before I knew it, it was <span>2am</span>. I instantly felt comfortable with Rowen.
Soon after, we were going to a fancy work function and I had to wear a cocktail dress. I was waiting in the lobby when Rowen walked in the door in a tux. I thought he was the most handsome man in the room. So things weren't awkward, he sent me a text from across the room telling me I looked beautiful.
As the evening progress we managed to sit together and chatted. I was pulled up for a dance with my boss. Then I was kind of passed around. I was getting a bit tired at this stage. Rowen had been sitting with our colleague Charlotte and she noticed how he was staring at me. She said to him "if you don't take your moment with her now, you never will". Before I knew it Rowen had tapped the guy I had been dancing with and said "I'll take it from here" and with that grabbed me in his arms, swooped me literally off my feet to a quieter side of the dance floor and as we danced he gently kissed me for the first time. I couldn't believe it. It was something out of movie. He was a gentleman the entire night and even walked me to my door.
Charlotte and I were talking the next morning and I kept saying "but he knows I'm sick, I don't understand why he'd want a bald cancer girl". But he did. Charlotte had the biggest grin on her face and told me to stop being silly, "why wouldn't he?"
I struggled at the beginning. I couldn't wrap my head around why someone would want to be with me as I was then. We were hanging out one night watching movies, and I just had a hat on. He said "why don't you just take it off?" I instantly became scared but thought, well if I'm going to scare him off, it's going to be now. When I took my hat off he didn't flinch, just smiled and said "you are still beautiful, it's you and me against the world". And from then on, I knew he was in it for the long run. All the nervousness went away and I felt so comfortable with him that I soon forgot about my hair and my breasts.
It's been over a year now. And on Jan 2 as I went to get up I saw a small envelope on the side table. It had "you and me against the world" written on it. I looked at him and he smiled. I opened it to find another envelope and inside was a piece of card. I pulled it out to read "will you marry me?"
Attached to the bottom of the card was a piece of string and at the end of it was a ring. I was instantly filled with joy and happiness and of course I said "Yes!"
Not in my wildest dreams did I think I would meet someone smack bang in the middle of my cancer treatment. Meeting someone was the last thing on my mind. I had put it aside thinking, no one wants all the baggage I come with. But Rowen saw beyond all that, he saw passed the cancer and saw me. He's a special man and I can't wait to be his wife.
